Present a Teacher Professional Development Event

The Frazier History Museum invites educators to attend a kick-off celebration of the centennial of the 19th Amendment. In partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools, the Museum will introduce attendees to ready-made curriculum “What is a vote worth?” including the history of women’s suffrage and voting rights for all in the U.S. Attendees will:

Hear remarks from Dr. Marty Pollio, JCPS Superintendent, and Carmen Moreno-Rivera, Interim Chief of Performance Improvement from the Mayor’s Office.
Receive instructional training for utilizing the website What is a Vote Worth? directly from its creators, including Ryan New, JCPS Social Studies Instructional Lead.
Learn inquiry based practices for utilizing the What is a Vote Worth resource through a series of breakout sessions, with an emphasis on written and verbal argumentation and taking informed action.
Hear an overview of the full Louisville suffrage history public events supported by over 100 local organizations and learn about the Frazier Museum’s major exhibition opening in March, 2020 that will examine Kentucky’s unique role in the fight for women’s suffrage.

Free to local educators. Stipend available, dinner served.

Paid parking is available in the museum lot. Free parking may be available on nearby city streets.

Nominate a teacher

The National Archives and the University of Kentucky Wendell H. Ford Public Policy Research Center are now taking self-nominations for the Earle C. Clements Innovation in Education Award for Civics and History Teachers (Clements Award). The submission deadline is Friday, May 11.

The Clements Award recognizes promising and innovative Kentucky high school educators and honors the life and career of the late Earle C. Clements and his lifelong commitment to education and public service. Clements’ political career included service as a county sheriff, clerk and judge; in the state senate and as governor; and in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, where he was a close colleague of future President Lyndon Baines Johnson.

Up to three high school history and/or civics (social studies) teachers throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky will be selected by an independent review panel for the Clements Award and will receive $1,000 each. The award criteria include the following:

teacher’s knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, the subject and commitment to increasing student awareness of the importance of public service;
impact on student success; and
evidence of creativity and innovation.

Interested applicants for the Clements Award must submit the following materials electronically or by mail postmarked no later than May 11:

a completed application;
a letter from applicant addressing criteria; and
a letter of support from principal.

In addition, applicants have the option to submit a sample assignment and/or other supporting materials, including student letters of support. Application packets may be completed electronically at https://uky.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3z1WMOjIX1ZusL3 or sent via mail to:

Centennial Women’s Suffrage

Women Leading the Way is a national art and storytelling project for high school students. Sponsored by Lycée Français de New York, the project is free to join, open to all high schools in the U.S. and its territories. Each student will create three short essays and 2 portraits that will be featured on a post they design – with the entries being published online. 100 entries will be selected to appear in a National Poster Exhibition to be held in New York City in 2020.

Deadline for registration is March 8, 2018. Register NOW.

Civics via Literary Lens

Check out this great article by Laura Tavares: “Looking at Citizenship Through a Literary Lens” from the Citizens in the Making issue of Educational Leadership (Nov 2017). She makes the claim that civic education must be planned across the curriculum and not just left up to social studies teachers. However, it takes a history teacher like you to make this all work. Who else is better trained to do this kind of teaching? We historians are always ready to imagine new ways to support student learning that prepare them for a robust democracy — and that preparation includes:

social and ethical awareness
agency
empathy
humility
tolerance for complexity

Tavares is part of a nonprofit organization called Facing History and Ourselves that supports teacher professional development in New England.

Clements Awards

The National Archives and the University of Kentucky Libraries Wendell H. Ford Public Policy Research Center will present the Earle C. Clements Innovation in Education Awards to three Kentucky teachers this afternoon in the Margaret I. King Library Building.

Clements Award applicants are judged on the following criteria: “ability to demonstrate knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, the subject and commitment to increasing student awareness of the importance of public service; expertise in civics and history content and the ability to share it with students; impact on student success; and evidence of creativity and innovation.”

The awards this year go to:

Amy Michele Madsen, George Rogers Clark High School (Clark County) – teaches U.S. history and African American History. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and a master’s degree in history from the University of Kentucky.
Steven K. Riley, Henry Clay High School (Fayette County) – teaches AP U.S. government, citizenship and criminal justice. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history education from Eastern Kentucky University and a master’s degree in history education from the University of the Cumberlands.
Whitney Walker, Lafayette High School (Fayette County) – teaches courses in government and geography (and serves as adjunct faculty in UK’s Department of Geography). She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in secondary social studies from University of Kentucky is currently a doctoral student in the College of Education.

Help needed – Mock Interviews

I teach a Careers in History class at UK that prepares our majors for a competitive job market and positions them to get the most mileage out of their degrees. They write resumes, cover letters, and this semester, based on student requests, I am adding a mock interview assignment. I have quite a few folks who are interested in secondary education, I am looking for a few teachers to interview them, using guidelines and questions that I will provide. Each interview will last 15-30 minutes. The interviews can be done at your work site (or other chosen location) if you are local, or by phone/Skype. At most, this should take an hour of your time. Students need to complete their interviews by April 13. If you are willing to help or if you have questions, please contact me at melanie.goan@uky.edu.

Dr. Joanna Lile

Dr. Joanna Lile, the Kentucky Woman Suffrage Project Fellow, seeks a K12 teacher to partner with her in building out a session at the KEA’s TALK conference this summer.

Dr. Lile is hoping to co-present in an hour and 15 minute slot about the 19th Amendment and the digital history project for Kentucky woman suffrage that is currently underway on the H-Kentucky network.
