Lexington, KY—From Hungary and Iran, Cuba and Pakistan, Burma and Vietnam, refugees from all around the world now reside in Kentucky. The 15.4 million refugees currently living in the United States have, at one point in their lives, faced war, poverty, or hunger. They have feared for their lives in their own country, and they have borne witness to unspeakable events—slaughter, imprisonment, and torture. Unlike immigrants seeking economic opportunity, refugees have come to America to escape persecution. For those who ended up in the Commonwealth, Kentucky provides them with the peace and security that they need, but it is not home. Home is no longer a viable option for them.

For refugees isolated from their homeland, cooking and eating their native dishes are among the most concrete ways they can maintain their identity. In Flavors from Home: Refugees in Kentucky Share Their Stories and Comfort Foods, now available in paperback, author Aimee Zaring uses her many years of expertise working with refugees to explore their everyday life, the situations that brought them here, and the food that connects them to home. Zaring shares their personal and dramatic accounts of their survival, as well as heartwarming and fascinating stories of their transition to living in America. Zaring also illustrates the importance of understanding the persecution and struggle that these refugees have gone through and the ability of food to provide a sense of familiarity for them when home is lost.

After more than two years of traveling the Commonwealth collecting recipes, uncovering stories, and cooking a diverse mix of cuisines from throughout the world, Zaring has crafted a book that highlights the lives that the resettled refugees have been able to create for themselves in Kentucky. Just as the refugees have brought the food and culture of their home countries to Kentucky’s doorstep, Flavors from Home allows readers to experience a taste of someone else’s home without having to travel to do so. It brings together the dishes of the refugees and the hospitality of their kitchens in a way that makes the unfamiliar feel comfortable. This book speaks a language that all who read it will understand and appreciate: the universal language of food.

Aimee Zaring lives in Louisville, Kentucky where, for more than five years, she has taught ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) at Catholic Charities, Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Global LT, and Jefferson County Public Schools.

Banning was one of the most distinguished historians of his generation. His first book, The Jeffersonian Persuasion: Evolution of a Party Ideology, was a groundbreaking study of the ideas and principles that influenced political conflicts in the early American Republic. His revisionist masterpiece, The Sacred Fire of Liberty: James Madison and the Founding of the Federal Republic, received the Merle Curti Award in Intellectual History from the Organization of American Historians and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Banning was assembling this collection of his best and most representative writings on the Founding era when his untimely death stalled the project just short of its completion. Now, thanks to the efforts of Todd Estes, this work is finally available. Founding Visions: The Ideas, Individuals, and Intersections that Created America showcases the work of a historian who shaped the intellectual debates of his time. Featuring a foreword by Gordon S. Wood, the volume presents Banning’s most seminal and insightful essays to a new generation of students, scholars, and general readers.

Lance Banning (1942–2006) taught at Brown University and the University of Kentucky and held a senior Fulbright appointment at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands in 1997. During his prolific career, he held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the National Humanities Center, and the Center for the History of Freedom.

Plenary Session at KATH meeting at duPont Manual High School, Sept 15, 2012The 37th Annual Meeting of KATH was a great success: nearly 60 attendees of postsecondary faculty, secondary educators, public historians, and students. Exhibits included representatives from the University Press of Kentucky,  the United States Daughters of 1812 – Kentucky Chapter, the Filson Historical Society, the Kentucky Historical Society, and the Campbellsville University’s Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society.

State Representative Steve Riggs presents legislative citation to Dr. George Herring at KATH conference, September 15, 2012

As part of a surprise organized by the U.K. History Department and the former presidents of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, State Representative Steve Riggs presented a legislative citation to our keynoter, Dr. George Herring, Professor Emeritus of the University of Kentucky.

Lunch included the incomparable performance of a Kentucky militiaman in 1812  by the talented teenager, Harry Smith under the auspices of the Kentucky Humanities Council.

The Phi Alpha Theta students from Campbellsville University will serve as guest bloggers for KATH (which will be re-posted to the H-Kentucky listserv) and give a summary of the wonderful keynote and discussion sessions.

The business meeting garnered a positive vote by acclamation for the KATH Constitution 2006 (proposed revisions 2012) which added standing committees to help organize the annual meeting, an Executive Committee 2012-13 (see below) and the presentation of three KATH student writing award certificates.
