Courage to do history

Many Higgins

Mandy Higgins, KY Historical Society

Have you seen the wonderful essay on the Kentucky Historical Society’s blog by Mandy Higgins, a KATH board member? Check it out: “Community Engagement as Institutional Branding, Or Why I’m Not Brave.” It is a terrific description of what many of us in KATH do.

She writes about how historians ask tough questions and support ways in which their audiences (on paper or in person) can find answers. “It is about modeling good listening skills and providing space for disagreement.”

However, we must disagree with Mandy when she writes: “I am not brave. I am a historian, doing her job.” She is indeed an intrepid warrior on behalf of all of us here in Kentucky. Thank you, Mandy, for all that you do.

Call for Board Members

In Business Meeting on October 6, 2017 by Randolph Hollingsworth

Calling all History educators from the many places in our state where history is part of your programming! Teachers, professors, independent scholars, archivists, librarians, public historians, local history association and museum docents, genealogists, avid history buffs! The Kentucky Association of Teachers of History (KATH) is in need of board members for the 2017-18 year.

KATH offers a common forum and source of information for all teachers of history in the Commonwealth and provides an avenue for members to share news about research and publications, educational activities, or concerns and problems relating to Kentucky’s history community. KATH is a service organization for those concerned about improving the quality of history education in Kentucky and offers opportunities to network and to attend professional development events, such as our annual conference. In this way we hope to improve the scope and quality of history education throughout Kentucky.

Volunteering their time and connections with international, regional or local experts, the KATH board primarily meets to organize the annual meeting. (See the list of current board members here.) They distribute useful information for history educators (using for example, the H-Kentucky network), and organize task groups to recognize scholarly achievement through a history student writing award program: the Anita Sanford Tolson Award for high school students; the Thomas D. Clark Award for undergraduates in American history; the Ray Betts Award for undergraduates in non-U. S. history; and the George Herring Award for graduate level papers.

This is a terrific opportunity to demonstrate your leadership in advocacy for history, its role in our curriculum and relevance to today’s communities — and our future. The following board spots for 2017-18 are open:

  • Research Universities Representative
  • Public Historian
  •  K-12 Representative
  • Private/Independent Universities Representative
  • Public/Comprehensive University Representative
  • Community College Representative
  • At-Large Representative
  • Secretary

Please indicate your interest by emailing KATH President, Brent Taylor at brente.taylor@kctcs.edu.

Thanks!
